Everyone Can Make Anything Now. That’s Not the Problem.

Here’s something nobody really wants to say out loud about this moment we’re in.
The tools got incredible. You can generate a track, a logo, a landing page, a whole campaign in an afternoon. And somehow a lot of the work coming out the other side feels more forgettable than ever.
That’s not a contradiction. It’s the whole thing.
When making something was hard, the difficulty did some of the work for you. It forced choices. You couldn’t try everything, so you had to decide what actually mattered. The constraint wasn’t in the way—it was doing the filtering. It was keeping you close to the one idea worth chasing.
Now the constraint is gone. You can chase all of them at once. And most people are.
So the bottleneck moved. It used to be can you make it. Now it’s can you still hear the thing worth making underneath all the stuff you’re suddenly able to produce.
That’s a harder problem, and almost nobody is treating it like one.
I notice it most in the studio. Someone comes in with thirty versions of an idea now instead of three. More options, more directions, more “what if we also.” And the strange part is the work usually isn’t further along. It’s further spread. The energy got distributed across everything they could make instead of concentrated on the thing they should.
The signal is still in there. It’s just harder to find under the volume.
This isn’t a complaint about the tools. The tools are doing exactly what they’re supposed to. The issue is that we got a massive upgrade in output and no upgrade at all in judgment—and judgment is the part that was always scarce. Taste. Knowing what to keep. Knowing what the idea actually wants to be before you bury it in alternatives.
That part didn’t get automated. If anything it got more valuable, because there’s so much more noise for it to cut through now.
I think a lot of people feel this and misread it. They feel scattered and assume they need more tools, more systems, a better workflow to manage all the output. So they add more. And it gets noisier. What they actually need is the opposite—a way back to the one signal that made the idea worth building in the first place.
More isn’t clarity. It never was. You can generate a hundred directions and still not know which one is true. The generating was never the hard part. Choosing is.
So if you’re building something right now and it feels louder than it used to, more cluttered, harder to hold onto—that’s not you falling behind. That’s just the new shape of the work. The making got easy. The hearing got hard.
The job now is to protect the signal. Everything else, you can make in an afternoon.
